If ever there was an accidental DJ, it would be Jeffrey Tonnesen, who was mistakenly – or fatefully – hired as a deejay by a nightlife promoter at New York City’s modish Niagra bar. This 2002 event was profoundly life-altering for the quick-witted, music-loving Delaware native. Within just three years, Jeffrey seized the opportunity to parlay his refined and diverse music collection into a unique DJ style, mixing classic disco with hip-hop and pop. He is now one of the most sought-after DJs in New York City.

The initial gig at Niagra led to several other sporadic appearances at such rock-and-roll havens as Darkroom and Lit. He was quickly becoming a staple figure within the influential Lower East Side party circuit. It was at Lit in 2005 that Jeffrey would be discovered by nightlife guru Serge Becker, who hired him as the resident DJ for his downtown hipster eatery, La Esquina. By then, Jeffrey was beginning to realize his passion for spinning was much more than a hobby.

La Esquina gave the young DJ an opportunity to perform for many of today’s most influential entertainers. Among them were Madonna, Heather Graham, Demi Moore, Robert De Niro, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Naomi Campbell, and Sean “Diddy” Combs. Jeffrey’s weekly residency at La Esquina quickly made him a favorite among their influential clientele. It was no surprise that requests started rolling in for him to spin private celebrity events, one of which was a charity affair hosted by Bono and Michael Stipe.

In 2007, Becker would again beckon for Jeffrey’s talent – this time for his newly opened cabaret club, The Box. Since then, Jeffrey has been entertaining such notable patrons as Calvin Klein, Leonardo DiCaprio and Sting. He recently deejayed for fashion icon Donna Karan and her friends during her 60th birthday party, held at The Box.

The buzz Jeffrey generated during his weekly gigs at The Box and La Esquina continued to open new doors and garner major venue residencies, such as 205, Double 7 and the exclusive Gold Bar. But there was more to come.

Armin Amiri, owner of the chic NYC Cuban lounge, Socilaista, asked him to spin there. Thrilled by the excitement his clientele immediately relayed to him about Jeffrey’s signature mixes and urbane style, Armin referred Jeffrey to Prada. His premiere performance for the renowned brand was an exclusive event at the Carlton Hotel, with guests including Cate Blanchette, Lucy Liu, Natalie Portman and Miuccia Prada. Jeffrey’s musical prowess not only demonstrated the innovative flair Prada was seeking, but also wowed the Italy-based creative team enough for them to repeatedly hire him for events throughout the U.S. and beyond – as far away as Hong Kong for a Miu Miu fashion show.

Jeffrey’s ultimate vision of bringing an exquisite, chic atmosphere back to the nightlife scene is quickly becoming a fait accompli. His current residencies include The Box, Gold Bar and the members-only club, Norwood.
